Local Artist Creates Children’s Book
About the USS Albacore Submarine |
Portsmouth, NH--Well-known local watercolor artist Denise F. Brown of Portsmouth, NH has recently created the children’s book, “USS Albacore Submarine, Welcome Aboard!” which is about a famous submarine that sits on the ground at Albacore Park in Portsmouth, New Hampshire and how she got there.
The book, “USS Albacore Submarine, Welcome Aboard!” tells the story of the one-of-a-kind submarine with the revolutionary tear-dropped shaped hull, from her design and production at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, to her adventures at sea and eventual decommissioning at the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard. When the people of Portsmouth found out the Navy wanted to use her for target practice and was planning on sinking her in the ocean, friends of Albacore rallied to save her and bring her home to Portsmouth. Brown’s animated characters and colorful illustrations of the sub’s journey brings the Albacore back to life. Thousands of people were involved along the way — you might even recognize a few of them in the story.
“I am just one of the many people who have ties to the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard and the Albacore,” says Brown. “My parents met while working at the Navy Yard and my family was part of the spectator crowd the day the Albacore was pushed through the channel on route to the park. I remember it was a freezing cold day, but everyone stayed on the bridge all day watching the men struggle to maneuver the little sub. We were told to stay back in case the cables snapped. When the tide was going out, her tail got stuck in the mud and we finally went home for the day, kind of disappointed, but eventually the Albacore was pulled to the spot where she now sits on the land.”
Brown, an accomplished artist, is well-known for her watercolor landscapes, paintings of horses, architectural renderings, and pony figurine designs for the Trail of Painted Ponies. She is the author/illustrator of the “Wind: Wild Horse Rescue” adventure book about a wild colt that gets rescued; the popular series of children’s coloring books, “Ted Gets Out,” which celebrates the adventures of one of her cats; and the children’s book, “Abenaki the Indian Pony,” about a little horse which travels the country. She also illustrated “Tugboat River Rescue,” which highlights a real tugboat rescue on the Piscataqua River and “Bad Cats of Biddeford,” a true story about a group of feral cats that needed homes, written by local author Crystal Ward Kent.
She just completed a coloring book for Hampton Beach Village District. Brown, and husband John O’Sullivan, own Ad-Cetera Graphics and Raccoon Studios of Portsmouth, NH.
